A Journey from Patriarchal Norms to Inclusive Leadership

A Journey from Patriarchal Norms to Inclusive Leadership

In a society deeply entrenched in patriarchal norms, my journey from observing stark gender disparities in my childhood to championing inclusive leadership as an adult has been both illuminating and transformative. Growing up with a head nurse mother and an innovative entrepreneur father, I found myself at the crossroads of potential and contradiction. Despite my mother's significant contributions, her efforts were dismissed within our home and society—a reflection of a broader issue that extends beyond personal anecdotes.

While dismissive of my mother's contributions, my father was different from others at the time because he believed in my potential to achieve anything, regardless of my gender. This rare and conflicting message made me acutely aware of societal inequalities, giving me the confidence to pursue my dreams.

Embracing Early Challenges with Resilience

At 16, I entered the adult world, two years ahead of my peers. I quickly learned a harsh truth: succeeding in a male-dominated world required not just following the rules but accepting them as my own. This realization propelled me to make history at 19 when I became the first female in a combat role in Israeli service. Despite the attention and platform this provided to inspire change, I held back, believing that the system was immovable and that to excel as a woman meant shedding any semblance of femininity. When forced to inspire, I failed, telling others that the only way was to let go of "female privileges." How blind I was.

A Transformation Sparked by Reflection and Understanding

It wasn't until my daughter came out as gay and began to question her gender identity that my perspective began to shift. Each time she expressed pain over my comments, I was forced to confront a painful truth: my views were deeply rooted in the very patriarchal mindset I thought I had overcome.

This was my turning point.

A Shift Through Personal Reflection

I began to see how every belief I held, every reaction I had, was colored by a patriarchal lens I hadn't even realized I was looking through. This realization was jarring but also freeing. It allowed me to reevaluate not just my role as a mother but also as a friend, a partner, and, importantly, a leader.

Leadership isn't about fitting into pre-established molds or playing by outdated rules. It's about challenging those norms, questioning the status quo, and creating spaces where everyone—regardless of gender, sexuality, or any other identity—can thrive. This epiphany has fundamentally changed how I lead. I strive now to lead with empathy, ask thoughtful questions, and champion inclusivity at every level.

But the journey doesn't end with me. It's a path we must all walk together. For those who find themselves where I once was, entrenched in outdated values without even realizing it, know this: change is possible. It begins with listening—really listening—to those around us, and it grows through understanding and education.

Embracing Inclusive Leadership

My call is simple. Let us approach each other with empathy. Let us use our leadership positions, no matter the scale, to foster environments where challenging conversations can happen and personal growth is not only encouraged but expected.

To those still navigating their way out of patriarchal perspectives, know that you're not alone. Change is a collective endeavor that begins with one thought, one conversation, and one action at a time. This article is mine. Together, we can redefine what it means to lead, to empower, and to succeed.

As we move forward, let's commit to being the change we wish to see, educating and empowering ourselves and those around us. The road from patriarchal paradigms to inclusive leadership is long and winding, but it's a journey worth taking—for ourselves, for our children, and for the generations to come.

Let this be our legacy: a world where leadership knows no gender, where potential is unlimited, and where empathy and understanding pave the way for a brighter, inclusive future.
